Over the past 10 years we have done a lot of concrete work for Garage Builders. Andrew Grech, owner of Mid TN Garages, recently contacted us about doing a garage slab in White House, TN.
There were some obstacles we faced in order to get this garage slab poured. First, the homeowner had an existing concrete aggregate driveway that we couldn’t pull a gravel truck or a concrete truck on, so that meant we would have to haul or pump the concrete a hundred feet from the road. Although this is not an ideal situation from a concrete guys standpoint, we have “been there and done that” dozens of times. It just took a little more work and a little more time than normal but all turned out well.

Middle Tennessee Garages is a garage building company located North of Nashville Tennessee. Mid TN Garages does work all over Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. We have worked for Mid TN Garages for the last 5 years, and we highly recommend them and their product. Give them a call today and let them know Concrete Workz referred you.

A few months ago we poured some concrete inside of a pole barn. One half of the barn was exposed aggregate, but the other half was going to be used as office space so the customer wanted something a little nicer. We ended up using a regular 3500 psi mix, but opted to stamp the concrete. It turned out great. Take a look.

Unless you build a house yourself, and know your specific needs, you will most likely have things that need to be changed around your home to suit your lifestyle. We recently poured an aggregate driveway extension just south of Nashville in Thompson Station, TN that is a perfect example.
The homeowner has a nice pull behind camper, and although he has a nice sized pea gravel turnaround leading into his garage, the turnaround became very small and cramped when he parked his camper there. The homeowner decided to simply extend his concrete turnaround to create the much needed room for the family camper.
There was quite a bit of slope in the ground beside his turnaround, so going too wide with the driveway extension was out of the question. The homeowner decided to extend his turnaround just about the width of his camper. This would get the camper out of the way and give the family their turnaround space back.
Because the slope was so drastic, the homeowner opted to turn down the concrete versus building up with gravel. The camper weighs alot so he was concerned about strength. Not only did turning down the concrete create strength, but it really gives a finished look to that high side of the concrete turnaround because it’s exposed aggregate as well.
For even more strength we poured the overall slab five inches thick and reinforced it with wire and with rebar in the front, which is a weak area and prone to cracking. We also tied it to the existing concrete turnaround by doweling half inch rebar into the concrete.
The home was at least 10 years old and oftentimes it’s hard to exactly match aggregate when you are spanning that kind of time gap. Rock that was used 10 years ago may not be exactly the same size or color as the rock a concrete company is using today. The rock ended up being a little smaller, and to the trained eye there is a difference, but all in all it was a pretty good match

The bulk of our concrete work is sidewalks, driveways, garages, and slabs. We have not had a lot of requests for decorative concrete work. However, we have done a few jobs that involved decorative concrete work.
The first decorative concrete job that we did was when my father built his house. He built an A-Frame and most of the living space was going to be downstairs. This bottom floor was all concrete so we decided to try our hand at acid staining. It was a really easy process and I must say that it turned out gorgeous.
We have also done some concrete stamping jobs. I was a little nervous to begin with, but as we began to see the results I realized that this was something that we could do very well. The key to it was just timing. We had to make sure we began the stamping when the concrete could still take the stamps impressions, but not so wet that the stamps would would leave a sloppy finish.
Some of the decorative concrete applications that people are doing these days are just amazing. Concrete countertops are becoming popular in some higher end homes, and most of the decorative finishes that can be done on regular concrete can be done on countertops as well. It’s very interesting to see concrete being used in so many ways.
